Welcome to DeadWood Renaissance. We are a two-person, family owned and operated woodworking business located in Pine, Colorado. Every piece of art we create is unique and one-of-a-kind. Our focus is on providing customers with the quality they deserve.

As our name implies, we try very hard to harvest "dead" wood and help its spirit live on. We do this by collecting only that wood which is dead standing or dead on the ground for our artistic creations. And, we collect every piece in our inventory ourselves.

When a piece is added to our inventory of "possibles", we follow a step-by-step process from start to finish. First, we pressure wash the bark off (and hope the piece is intact enough to work with - sometimes we get into a piece thinking we've got a real beauty on our hands only to find that it isn't stable enough to be usable in any form). Second, we remove any remaining debris through a painstaking process in which we use dental picks, carving bits, riffler rasps, and anything else we can adapt for this purpose (this is the most difficult and time consuming step in the entire process, but, arguably the most rewarding because this is the process that begins to reveal the beauty underneath the bark). Third, we sand the entire piece using a combination of specialty power tools and hand sanding in order to obtain the  smoothest surface possible for finishing. Finally, we apply all finish coats by hand. What makes us unique in this regard is that our finishing process includes a sanding sealer or danish oil to start with, and a minimum of three coats of hand rubbed satin or gloss polyurethane varnish, depending on the wishes of the customer, to finish. Most of the time, no stain is used (we prefer the "natural" look and beauty of the wood) unless the customer wants a different color. If that's the case, we use Watco Danish Oil stain and varnish combination for the first finishing coat. This product stains, penetrates, and applies a coat of polyurethane all in one pass. After this coat has had time to cure, the hand rubbed polyurethane finish coats are applied one by one with a minimum of 24 hours curing time in between coats.

Our artistic creations can add a warm, inviting accent to any home, vacation hideout, log cabin, or even a place of business. Hopefully, the pieces we create will become family heirlooms passed down from generation to generation, thereby letting "the spirit in the wood live on".
